The Puntland Ministry of Interior invited five representatives from the States of Jubbaland, South West and Galmudug to participate in a 3 day workshop held 22-24 May 2017, in Garowe, designed to improve knowledge transfer and inter-state collaboration on local governance.

The group included: Jubbaland Director General, MoI; Jubbaland MoI Consultant; South West Consultant; Galmudug MoI Consultant; Galmudug M&E Advisor, MoI. The group visited Garowe Municipality and District Council Assembly where they spent a half day as observers. They also met with the Puntland Ministry of Interior including Deputy Minister, Acting Director General and directors of departments who briefed them on their daily activities, as well as the  Association of Local Government Authorities Puntland (ALGAPL)   Director.

Abdulalhi Hashi, Puntland Deputy Minister of Interior and Local Government (MoILG) commented: “We are all excited to host our guests from the new states. Let us hope this will be the beginning of new momentum that will ultimately create platform to exchange ideas, interact each other and share best practices on all issues related to local governance and decentralized service delivery across Somalia.”

Abdirahman Abdir Mohamed, Director General, Ministry of Interior and LG Jubbaland: “As you all know, Jubbaland is still in infant stage ….. if anyone asks me what we have gained from our visit to Garowe, it is that we have a long way to go. For the last few days, we got an opportunity to interact and have talks with experienced directors from Puntland districts. We noted challenges and opportunities when developing the DDF and we hope this will not be the end of our interactions.”

The success of the mission has inspired the federal Ministry to plan a second visit to Puntland with more people and jointly with the UN’s Deputy Representative of the Secretary General Mr De Clerq, planned for September.
